$50 for a Whitewater-Rafting Tour for Two People from Northwood’s Adventure in Vulcan ($105.90 Value)

America has always been the most extreme country, from the Boston Tea Punchings to having the first man swear on the moon. We hold this shredding guitar solo to be self-evident with today’s Groupon: for $50, you get a whitewater-rafting tour for two people from Northwood’s Adventure in Vulcan (a $105.90 value). Northwood’s Adventure’s experienced instructors guide two eight-passenger rafts through Class IV rapids on three-hour expeditions floating atop the scenic Menominee River. Trips start with a lesson in proper paddling, building up rapport amongst co-raftsmen before heading out into the currents of Class I and II rapids set against a backdrop as awe-inspiring as haikus written by a skywriter. Rafters meander down the river until they hit the gorge, where passengers climb out of water vessels for a quick hike to get an aerial view of the upcoming rapids. Boats then navigate through the Class IV rapids, enjoying the bouncy ride while little ones and timid paddlers watch from above. All paddlers then reconvene for the final stretch of river, enjoying pristine views of the winding water and possible bald eagle sightings that don’t require wearing American-flag pants as bait. Rides conclude with passage over the “terminal surfer,” where instructors jettison adventure-seekers over a surf hole to finish off an adrenaline-rush-filled day. Two Hours of Bowling and Shoe Rental for Two or Four at AMF Bowling Centers (Up to 57% Off). 271 Locations Nationwide.

Bowling is better with friends, as you have someone there to talk to between turns and to watch your back when pins decide they’ve had enough. Bring some backup with today’s Groupon to AMF Bowling Centers . Click here for a list of the 271 participating AMF Bowling Center locations. Choose between the following options: For $18, you get two hours of bowling and shoe rental for two people (a $42.06 average national value based on two people bowling four games each in two hours). For $33, you get two hours of bowling and shoe rental for four people (a $67.32 average national value based on four people bowling three games each in two hours). Gleaming lanes, modern equipment, and tempting refreshments satisfy every stripe of striker at AMF Bowling Centers. Patrons spend two revolutions of the minute hand gracefully lobbing three-holed marbles at stoic ivory formations as automatic scoring systems and pin-spotters free fingers for celebratory handstands. Pairs of bowlers young and old compete to pick up strike- and spare-hitchhikers with an appropriately weighted ball from the center’s stable of spheres. Before beginning the pin bombardment, players don the included rental shoes, ensuring their homemade bowling cleats don’t scratch polished surfaces. Players can curb game-induced cravings with a selection from the wings, pizza, and burgers available at the on-site grill (not included with this Groupon). Most AMF locations stay open late into the night for tenpin diehards to practice and sleep-bowlers to actually bowl instead of rooting through refrigerators to throw cantaloupes at milk cartons; check your preferred location for specific hours. Values for this deal are based upon averages of participating national locations and may vary. Call your local center for pricing. The people’s Plaza

Yesterday I stopped by the OccupyMN protest in downtown Minneapolis. They are occupying the Hennepin County Government Plaza and calling it the people’s plaza.

Tevlin: Whatever your point of view, protesters have real concerns

Walking through the crowds on what they called “The People’s Plaza” during the Minnesota version of Occupy Wall Street, I was reminded once again that democracy is a messy thing, and often poorly dressed.
